So on my old laptop, running Win7, I had an app for a Ventrilo Voice Overlay that displays people who join, disconnect, and are speaking on Vent.
I know Vent has it's own overlay, but I haven't tried working it out and I have heard people don't really enjoy it anyway.

I downloaded this program on my new laptop, running Win8, and I have all settings exactly the same as on my old laptop, but it fails to connect correctly or recognize my name or something. As it won't display any channels, or when people are speaking. I will edit with screenshots momentarily.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or if any Win8 users have ran into this issue (as Googling doesn't produce much help since the program is older)

I have tried running the overlay as admin, Ventrilo as admin, and the game I want the overlay to work on as admin. None correct the issue and allow the overlay to read my name in Vent.
I have also tried using a different name.

As I said, screenshots incoming momentarily.

Maybe the overlay you are using isn't compatible with some specific Windows 8 configurations?

Give the Ventrilo overlay a shot and see if it works.

Not that it is completely relevent to the topic at hand, but in case you prefer Windows 7 over 8 (new laptop obv has 8), some companies offer a tutorial to convert backwards.

I know Lenovo does, as I have ordered the Y510p last night and found a guide they offer. Perhaps your laptop manufacturer can do the same?

Yeah, I had looked at Vent's built-in overlay and its very bulky.
It works on my old laptop, I just tried it, but my new one says it doesn't "support hardware video overlay." Which MAY be my issue with the other overlay? But the other overlay doesn't give me an error, it runs, it just won't detect my name.

If you google Voice Overlay, it should come up as the first link, on a site named Kingpin or something like that.

I have HP, and I have honestly been looking to convert back to Win7, because 8 has/causes too many problems for me and the programs I use. I would only hate to reinstall everything over again XD
But I'm unsure if HP overs the backwards conversion :/ At least for free. I've looked into it, and many people say its difficult. I'm afraid of messing up my drivers heh.

Sounds like the issue is the computer then; the overlay just isn't configured for Windows 8.

Yeah, I'm running into issues even with a supposed fix for Win8 and it's issue with overlays. Not even that is working >_<
Sigh. Looks impossible to fix thusfar. And I can't find any other overlays that mimic VoiceOverlay and work on Win8.

Oh well.

Thanks ^_^

/e I actually restarted Ventrilo and the fix for the built-in overlay is working :o ...will test on VoiceOverlay now
