is it common for people to change their names and instantly (and by instantly i mean instantly) be mistaken for another user?
do i have to be worried about being called 'multi' and getting locked or some shit?

if that's the case i wouldn't have changed my name

nothing to worry about a namechange.
in case you can put "known as (your name before namechange)" into your sig

This pretty much. I've known people that announce they are gonna change their name then someone took it.

For example:

Njaguar makes an announcement that he's changing his JSP to PaulTaul (We know this wont happen, but for the lulz, w/e)

He actually changes his name to PaulTaul.

Someone gets a namechange to Njaguar afterwards.

Obviously this user would be banned for impersonation, but we can substitute Njaguar with a normal user.

But if IPs don't match up and you have a similar name to someone, you're safe.
Hell, someone could get a name change to BananaLover without the _ and be perfectly safe unless they try to impersonate.

There are other ways to know that you are not another user, such as your post count, join date, and current guild and friends. You won't be locked if you didn't commit a scam.

The only thing that changes on your account is the name. Your user id, post count, join date, gold, etc will all remain exactly the same.

Taken from Name Change FAQ

If you are being accused as a "multi", simply ignore the user with the Block List feature.

Block doesn't work in threads, which is where most multi accusations would come from.

But yup, the number at the end of the link of your profile page will stay the same regardless. Also, old posts with your old name will NOT show your new name under the thread creator.
But once you go into the thread, the new name is there. I do not know if this is a glitch or if it's meant to be that way.

If I make a thread now, then change my name to 123abc, the thread on the main page would show Banana_Lover as the creator, but when you go in, it'd show 123abc as the first post.
Could keep old threads like that as proof of a name change as well.
