A recording program that creates raw video data, could go with Fraps (other options: Camtasia, Camstudio, Gamecam).
A program to compress, cut and possibly merge the video files, I recommend VirtualDub (free).
Fraps is what most people use. For a Mac, your best bet for video/audio merging would be Wondershare Free. That too is a free web-based software available for download. For PC, Audacity is another good program. (Which this is free as well).
'Apowersoft' which is a Mac alternative to fraps. 'BS player' is an alternative for PC video recording.
Alternatives to VLC: (All Free Web-Based programs: MplayerX, Plex, and Xbmc)
To merge,
1. Go to the Convert section of the program and click the Add Files or Load DVD button to load source medias.
2. Check Merge all videos into one file on the bottom of the interface.
3. Choose one output format on the right Output Format section of the program, and click Convert to start conversion. The program will merge all files on the file list into one after conversion.
How to use FRAPS and video recorder (Audacity)
Let's start with the basics. Get a game. If you're wanting to do a let's play of, oh, Chrono Trigger, then you should get an emulator. This tutorial assumes that you already know all about those. If you're just playing a computer game, then skip the emulator.
*First, you download FRAPS video game recorder, it is the best.
*Then download Audacity; this is one of the best free audio input recorders.
*Get a Microphone.
*Plug it in to your computer. Normally it's the pink plug.
*Test it out with Audacity. When Audacity is open, click on the button near the top with the red circle. This starts recording. Say something, then click on the yellow square. This stops it. Play it back with the green triangle. If it sounds fine, then great. If not, try a different microphone.
*Double click on FRAPS and then, click on the third tab in FRAPS.
(Notice where you can change the button to start recording. Normally it's either F4 or F6).*Start up Audacity.
*Start up your game. You should notice yellow numbers in the corner of the game window. This shows that FRAPS is running.
*Put your microphone on and start recording in Audacity.
*Press the button that is set to start FRAPS recording. The yellow numbers should change red. This shows that it is recording. If the numbers are very much lower than 25-30, then your video will lag. Try changing some settings in the game.
*When you're done, press the button that you pressed to start FRAPS. The numbers should turn yellow again.
*Stop Audacity. Click File > save as WAV. Save it as a WAV.
*Start up a video encoder and create your video.
