Hey My computer has a virus on it and I need to get it off. I've never reformatted my computer so I'm not quite sure how to do it. But what exactly does it do and how do I do it? Does anyone know?

Formatting your computer will erase all the data off your computer.
You will then need to install an operating system.
The easiest way to do this is through the windows cd/dvd (xp,vista,7)

Before you reformat make a backup of all of your data, if your anti virus is detecting a virus that it cant remove i would use google to see other ways of getting rid of it. If your computer just isn't running right, doing a system restore would be a good idea before formatting.

It reinstalls windows, so anything you have on your computer will be totally gone except the essential files needed for your computer to run

Unless you're prepared for a reformat it should be your last option.
Have you tried to remove the virus without resorting to a reformat?

Anti-Virus Protection/Scanners
AVG
Avira
Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials
etc.

Spyware/Malware
Malwarebytes
Spybot-Search and Destroy
etc.

I'd suggest downloading one from each list and running them.
If you're lucky a quick scan from Malwarebytes might solve your problem
