I'd simply check the emoticon option: Tools, Options, Messages tab, and make sure the emoticons options are checked.

if that doesn't work for you, make sure you're in the MAIN msn menu

This was unchecked... So i checked it.. Still not working. going to sign in and out, I'll lyk.
