Just today my system started going completely haywire on me. I will be doing anything on the system (gaming, browsing, netflix, etc) and the screen will go to grey/static. It sometimes goes back to the normal screen, usually stays static.

Any ideas?

Console was purchased brand new in 2009, 160 gig fat boy

Have you tried a different cord? AV/HDMI?

if you have a spare hdmi id test it out to make sure its not the cable or if it is then congrats you win.

with the console off use air duster on all vents, make sure there is nothing close to those vents thus blocking air flow then post results for further suggestions

Might still be a over heating issue if the vid card is getting too hot. Might have to crack her open

Is the screen going static but the audio is still working?
The reason I ask is because if the audio is still working it would mean the problem is with the system, but if everything cut's out the problem may still be the system or something between the system and television.

Just trying to narrow down what it may possibly be. I wouldn't rule out the television. My Sony Bravia has some wonky quirk's with my PS3.

The television is getting old. The black and dark colors are all fucked up since about a month ago, life the blacks turn green and look absolutely terrible, making it hard to play darker games like fallout (I have to wait 8-10 hours roaming the wastelands when it gets dark). But when I hook my computer up to the tv via hdmi cord it works fine, just the dark colors are still messed up so I know that problem is the television. But yeah, the audio still works when the video display goes static.

I am a mechanic/body man, not an electronics guy so I am extremely hesitant to open it up and see what i can clean. There is a ghetto little xbox/playstation repair shop up the road a little ways. I was thinking of bringing it there to see what they can do for me, but I am unsure of how good of an idea it is to bring my console to an unlicensed shop. What do yall think about that?

It work's when you hook it up to the monitor or it doesn't?
I might be the only one thinking this but the blame might be on the television and not the console. Sounds like you and an CRT television where the colour tubes are giving out.

No it is not the television causing the static screen it is the playstation. I have a lcd screen that is maybe six years old, I think it is just giving up on life. I put that television through hell, not physically but just a hell of a lot of usage.
