So basically I bought GT5 today and it told me I had to install 2gb before I could actually play the game. Accepted then came back 30 seconds later to find the light blinking red. After some research I found it's basically the same thing as the red ring of death, only for PS3. Anyone here ever come across this issue? PS3 is probably 4-5 years old, but never had a problem with it up until now. Any surefire ways to fix it (without paying sony)?

Hopefully I can open it up tomorrow and try to fix it.

you sure your memory wasnt just full?

maybe your hard drive pootched ive read about HDs dieing and doing the same sort of deal and hds can die randomly its not uncommon
e: and there is a way to fix it but it only lasts about a month or 2 so you would be doing it a lot if its the chip ylod
its like $200 to send to sony to fix id say just wait more towards xmas buy a new 1 bundled with a game or two for what are the 299 now?

Get a new PS3 if you're going to play GT5. The old PS3's can't stand up to games like GT5. The same exact thing happened to me. My old PS3 never had a problem for 5 years until I played GT5 on it.
