KEEPINITHOOD’S GUIDE TO GRIEF’S MYSTERY HIDDEN DAMAGE TO A WW BARB

1.) TOPIC
2.) EXAMPLES OF THE MIN’S and MAX’S OF GRIEF
3.) SKILL POINTS %ED FOR WHIRLWIND AND MASTERY SKILL
4.) ADDITION OF CHARMS, STRENGTH POINTS, AND JEWELS
5.) THE TRUE POWER OF GRIEF (CALCULATION OF THE HIDDEN DAMAGE)
6.) CONCLUSION

1.) TOPIC
Hey guys. This is my first guide in jsp. This guide will focus on the additional hidden damage you get from a grief (phase blade, zerker, or colossus blade, etc.) when a barbarian is in ww. This guide focuses on the raw damage after the calculated enhanced damage (no critical strike, open wounds, crushing blow, loss in pvp penalty, damage reduction, or IAS). Before we get started on this intensive calculation, let’s look at the actual runeword stats itself:

Runeword Name: Grief

Allowed Items: 5 Socket
Swords/Axes
Runes: Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral
35% Chance To Cast Level 15 Venom On Striking
+30-40% Increased Attack Speed (varies)
Damage +340-400 (varies)
Ignore Target's Defense
-25% Target Defense
+(1.875 per character level) 1.875-185.625% Damage To Demons (Based on Character Level)
Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
-20-25% To Enemy Poison Resistance (varies)
20% Deadly Strike
Prevent Monster Heal
+2 To Mana After Each Kill
+10-15 Life After Each Kill (varies)

The main component of added damage to a barbarian’s ww is:
1 - %ed on ww
2 - %ed on master skill
3 - %ed on jewels, armor, etc
4 - +strength points (1 strength = 1%ed)

2.) EXAMPLE OF THE MIN’S and MAX’S OF GRIEF

So there is a varying range a weapon can do due to the enhanced damage on the weapon, and the +damage this runeword does. Let’s take a couple of examples.

First, let’s see the range of damage for a grief ettin axe.
The stats on an ettin axe are:

Name: Ettin Axe

One-Handed Damage: 33 to 66 (49.5 Avg)
Level: 52
Strength: 145
Dexterity: 45
Range: 2
Durability: 24
Sockets: 5
Speed: [10]
Asn, P - Fast
Ama, B, D, N, S, - Normal

We will first provide a calculation for a normal, non-superior ettin axe at +340 damage.

Min. damage = 33 + 340 = 377
Max. damage = 66 + 340 = 406
Average damage = [406 + 377] / 2 = 391.5

Now let’s try at +400 damage:

Min. damage = 33 + 400 = 433
Max. damage = 66 + 400 = 466
Average damage = [466 + 433] / 2 = 449.5

Next, let’s try a 15%ed ettin axe at +340 damage:
Min. damage = 33*1.15 + 340 = 377.95
Max. damage = 66*1.15 + 340 = 415.9
Average damage = 396.925

Now at 15ed with +400 damage:
Min. damage = 33*1.15 + 400 = 437.95
Max. damage = 66*1.15 + 400 = 475.9
Average damage = 456.925

You guys pretty much get the point on the mins and max that the weapon holds. Next section, I will provide a table list (from skills 1 – 40 only) of the %ed whirlwind and sword or axe mastery.

As you can see, there is a wide range of ed in both categories. If you happen to have a skill level higher than 40 for either of these, you can follow this easy calculation to determine your %ed

Whirlwind %ed calc:
Damage% = -50% + [(skill level – 1) x 8%]

Mastery %ed calc:
Damage% = 28% + [(skill level – 1) x 5%]

For example, say you have a level 45 ww and level 43 mastery. The %ed would yield for each:

Whirlwind %ed = -50% + [(45 – 1) x 8%] = 302%

Mastery %ed = 28% + [(43 – 1) x 5%] = 238%

4.) ADDITION OF CHARMS, STRENGTH POINTS, AND JEWELS

In most cases for a barb, he would add %enhanced damage or max damage jewels to his helm/shield. He will most likely sport around max/ar/lifer grand charms or small charms, mastery gc’s, combat gc’s, max/ar/strength (hopefully not the case!)

So let’s see what are the typical jewel’s/charms a barbarian would use:

Jewels:
Ruby jewel of Virility: 40% enhanced damage / +9 to strength (overall = 49% enhanced damage)
Ruby jewel of Daring: 40% enhanced damage / +9 to dexterity (overall = 40% enhanced damage)
Vermilion jewel of Carnage: +30 to maximum damage

Charms:
Sharp grand charm of vita: 10 to maximum damage / 4x – 76 to attack rating/ 36 – 45 to life
Steel grand charm of vita: 100 + to attack rating / 36 – 45 to life
Fine small charm of vita: 3 to maximum damage / 10 – 20 to attack rating / 16 – 20 to life
Steel small charm of vita: 30+ to attack rating / 16 – 20 to life

Gear with %enhanced damage or additional min to max damage:
Fortitude: +300% enhanced damage
Phoenix: +350 – 400% enhanced damage
Steelrends: +30 – 60% enhanced damage / +15 – 20 to strength (45%ed min / 80%ed max)
Wartravelers: adds 10-15 damage (10 to min / 15 to max)

There may be a variety of others out there, but for now, lets focus on these that are listed.

5.) THE TRUE POWER OF GRIEF (CALCULATION OF THE HIDDEN DAMAGE)

Now it’s time to get into the juicy part. The actual damage of grief! It may read on a normal barbarian’s screen that whirlwind damage is from 600 – 2400 (as an example), but this is what it is actually doing (This is before the pvp penalty reduction of damage).

Let’s use this set up as an example for a normal BvB barbarian:

Helm: Arreats (2barb skills / 2 to combat skills / with 40ed +9strength jewel)
Armor: Fortitude (300% enhanced damage)
Weapon: 15ed/ +400 damage grief berserker axe
Shield: Stormshield (with 30 to maximum damage)
Gloves: Steelrends (60% enhanced damage/ +20 to strength or 80% enhanced damage)
Hellfire torch: +3 to barbarian skill levels
Annilihus: +1 to all skill levels
Grand Charms: 9 x 10 to maximum damage/ XX to attack rating/ 40+ to life grand charms
Small charms: 10 x 3 to maximum damage/XX to attack rating/ 20 to life small charms

Total skill in Whirlwind: 20 max from skills + 4 from arreats + 3 from torch + 1 from anni + 1 from Battle Command
= Level 29 Whirlwind or 174% enhanced damage

Total skill in Mastery: 20 max from skills + 2 from arreats + 3 from torch + 1 from anni + 1 from Battle Command
= Level 27 Axe Mastery or 158% enhanced damage

Total points into strength: Let’s say 156 to get to stormshield + 30 from stormshield + 20 from Steelrends
= 206 to strength or 206% enhanced damage

Now let’s calculate the minimum and maximum damage of a 15%ed grief berserker axe:

Minimum damage:
Min damage = 1.15*27 + 400 = 431.05

Maximum damage:
Max damage = 1.15*71 + 400 = 481.65

Let us add the additional charms and jewels that give us maximum damage:
Max damage = 481.65 + 10 x 9 from grand charms + 3 x 10 from small charms + 30 from Jewel in SS
Max damage = 631.65

Now Calculate the %ed from all of your gear and skills:
%ed = 300ed from fortitude + 49ed from jewel in arreats + 80ed from steelrends + 174ed from ww +158ed from mastery + 206ed from total strength
%ed = 967% enhanced damage to grief

Note: In this next series of calculation, 100% enhanced damage will be added to the total amount of ed to compensate for the damage that is initially done.

Minimum overall Grief damage = 431.05 x (967% enhanced damage from gear and skill + 100% enhanced damage for the calculation modifier)

Minimum overall Grief damage = 4599.3035

Maximum overall Grief damage = 631.65 x (967% enhanced damage from gear and skill + 100% enhanced damage for the calculation modifier)

Maximum overall Grief damage = 6739.7055

Overall, you would get a range of 4599.3035 – 6739.7055 on this set-up. You wouldn’t see that on screen since it wouldn’t register the +340 – 400 damage on grief.

In summary, you can perform you calculation as so:
Min damage = grief min. damage wep + any + minimum damage gear/charms/jewels
Max damage = grief max. damage wep + any +maximum damage gear/charms/jewels

Enhanced damage = %ed from Whirlwind + %ed from Mastery + %ed on gear, jewels, etc.

Overall minimum damage = Grief min damage x (%enhanced damage + 100%ed modifier)
Overall maximum damage = Grief max damage x (%enhanced damage + 100%ed modifier)

6. CONCLUSION
So there you have it folks. This is the true damage of grief before any penalty were to take place (pvp penalty and damage reduction). Any feedback and constructive criticism is appreciated as always. Thank you very much for reading this guide. If I get positive feedback for this, I may also provide an extensive Attack Rating guide to a barbarian as well. Happy Reading all. Thank you again. =)

Looks about right to me Jim, that's a detailed breakdown of the damage. I didn't realize it had that much raw damage before PvP penalties. Gj
