wats the difference between jail break & unlocked iphones

i srsly want to know thx

once i know this answer, i have another question that im offering fg for a solution (not just advice)

jailbreak is legal as far as i know, what u do after jailbreaking may not be

I don't know about iPhones in particular, but I know that usually an "unlocked" phone, just means it's unlocked so you can use it for any phone company, not just the one it was purchased from. A jailbroken iPhone/iTouch/etc is hacked into and made so all the apps etc are free. IIRC, anyway. I don't know I've never had one.

my other question is this:

my wife was given an iphone 4 but it's locked to AOL or AT&T (can't remember which one cos drunk atm and dun want to wake her up to ask)

but we r in Vietnam atm and have been told (by the local iphone pros) that the iphone 4 cant be unlocked with that provider currently if u not in the USA

is this true? basically i want to know how to unlock her iphone cos jail breaking seems pointless imo
