If it's the legal benefits(and/or status), fight for that. You have every right, there is a reason for separation between church and state.

As an atheist, I can never see myself getting married - in the religious sense.

an apt analogy would be someone who is religious to stop believing in what they were brought up with, for some people it is easy but for others they believe no matter what
