Read some of J.G. Ballard's short stories. They all vary in content and tone but a large majority, if not all, revolve around bleak modernity / dystopia.

I'd advise picking up a small collection of his stuff at a library or something, and if you like his style, there's some collected works of his available on sites like Amazon. He's one of my favourite authors, I'd highly recommend him.

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Generally recognized as the first of the genre--and a great book. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is also well worth a read.
