Often times people make threads that end up closed and the person who created the thread doesn't know why. Although jsp has rules some of them are open for interpretation so it's possible someone breaks a rule without knowing it. For example a user might make a post without thinking of it as spam and a moderator views it differently. Also, many topics are closed and when the creator views the topic it says "closed due to spam" even though that might not be the exact reason. What this results in is many users either feeling their threads were closed unjustly or not sure altogether why their thread was closed. The problem with this is they then make another thread saying "why was my thread closed" which just exacerbates the issue and they can get upset with the system and the site moderators.

What I am suggesting is either a message field when a thread is closed that only the thread creator can read, just like the "Closed for Spam" message, where the moderator that closed the thread can type something like "I had to close your thread, you posted in the wrong subforum, post here: <link>." Or, a policy where a moderator that closes the thread sends a pm to the thread creator explaining why the thread was closed.

The reason I feel this is necessary is because it will help users understand the site rules better and cut down on the number of "why did my thread get closed" threads. In addition, when the site staff is more transparent about the reasoning behind thread closures I think it will promote a better relationship between staff and site users. Many users with closed threads tend to think moderators are abusing the power even though that is seldom the case.

I have two yes options on the poll, the first option is for if you think providing a reason for why the thread should be closed is optional to the moderators. Some thread closures are obvious so there is no reason for a moderator to take the time to explain why it was closed. And the second option is if you think moderators should always say why a thread was closed.

with the amount of users on the forums and as many threads Mods have to deal with there just isn't time to put comments every time a thread is closed That's why when threads are closed the reasoning is input there.

The creator of the thread will get a reason to why the topic was closed, thats enough.

No.

A thread might be closed for inappropriate content or spam, and the creator is not always responsible. The best option is read forum rules; questions and clarifications about the forum rules, such as defining spam and whatnot, could directed at the staff members.

Being familiar with the rules can eliminate the odds of a thread being closed. There should be come content/substance to an opening post that might guide a discussion. Creating a topic without content/substance is an invitation to spammers to spam. Furthermore, people are often quick to respond to trolls, and often flame and feed these people. The best thing that can be done is to ignore those people, and report those posts before moving on.

It is wasteful to create thread like, “Why was this thread closed?”

While some threads snowball in with spam and are closed, there is not much that can be done about it. As mentioned above, there is too much traffic on d2jsp to dedicate details to each and every case. Sometimes, you just have to roll with the blows.

Everytime a topic is closed, there is a reason for it in the top part of the topic for the topic creator.
