8 has a better story, 7 has a better gameplay and battle mechanics
8 shows more/better character depth and development for the min character, 7 does a better job developing the overall cast but none of the characters are as properly developed as Squall
8 has the awesome card game, 7 has a wider/better variety of sidequests
8 has spectacular cinematics and soundtracks that later influenced tons of other RPGs, 7 changed the way many people saw RPGs and boosted the genre

it all depends on what you consider more important

8 was the first FF i played, loved it so much.. it's so hard to pick between these, always thought 8 was underated.

6 is also up there i would say, and 9 has a wonderful world

my first FF was 8 too. I Actually maybe like it more than 7...

Only thing 8 had going for it was triple triad and Squall's jacket. Other than that it was a snoozefest. 7 is flat out overrated.
