What's the difference between private and retail servers?

FFXI is by far my most favorite game. It really is. It's just when you HAVE a real life, you can't really invest in it anymore.

i had no idea there was a private server ffxi...can anyone link me up id definately play i started ffxi during beta and played like 8 years hardcore HNMLS

For those who are actively playing still: I'd like to ask what content is missing. Just a few things I've thought of.

What jobs are playable vs retail version? (I looked at the FFXIFree site, and didn't see anything mentioning Dragoon for example)
The cap is 75, but what content is available? (It looks like only RoZ, CoP, and Aht Urghan. I'm wondering if other 75 content is available, like Wings of the Goddess(Campaign etc), A Shantotto Ascension, A Moogle Kupo D'etat, A Crystalline Prophecy)
I read on the FFXIFree forums that new users are getting shit compared to members that joined like a month ago, what's up with that?
What End game is actually available? (Looks like Dynamis/Sky/Sea, but what about Salvage, Assault, and Nyzul Isle. What about Besieged?)

I just started playing..

Most jobs are available. Some things are not implemented yet (minor stuff) like Dancer's steps (samba, flourish, etc all work fine) PUP Automaton is broken afaik, dragoon works but enmity +/- isn't working properly so high/super jump dont work, some wyvern abilities are missing, the healing breath enhancements are off. but loldrg anyway. The new jobs (Geo and Run) are not included. A lot of the random side quests don't exactly work fine, but more and more are fixed every day. A couple unimportant bard songs don't work, that's all that isn't working off the top of my head.
A lot of BCNMs/Scripted NM spawns/etc aren't working, but stuff is one by one becoming functional. Some of these unatainable items and a few others are available for purchase via beastman's/kindred's seals.
Only content from RotZ and CoP, and a little ToAU is open. Wotg is working enough to unlock SCH and DNC and that's about it.
End game, all of the original content + CoP I think. I'm still low level but I don't think anyone is doing CoP endgame. City dynamis works, and northlands coming soon I believe.


The pluses, You move at 1.5x normal speed. This is amazing, it's so much faster speed-wise. This server has FOUR times xp bonus on ALL THE TIME. FFXI retail was super slow and most people hated that about it. Not anymore. I just leveled my Dancer from 1-20 in an hour and a half or so with an emperor band charge. Crafting gets double skillups. It's free.

All in all, it's worth a try if you're an old FFXI player with the itch, or someone who never played it, this version is much more enjoyable than the retail one.

I played retail for 7 years. I like this better and I've been playing a week.

I do not currently play, but I like Abyssea. I never liked the old school playing. I played since 04. I played ffxifree for a week. I got alchemy to like 70+ quickly, but it was boring, and they didn't have my fav job (Dancer). I didn't want to play old school, and the people I met were douchebags so I quit. It has been a few months since I tried it. I'm not going to install it again since it was a pain in my arse the first time.

I also like abyssea, but I also did like the retail version when the cap was 75. I honestly wished that the retail version made abyssea a 75 minimum requirement to enter, just so the rest of the game areas wouldn't have completely died.

But, I don't think this server sounds very good, or like it would be worth the effort. Even though the cap is 75, there is so much 75 content that isn't even there. It sounds like most of Aht Urghan(Assault/Salvage/Nyzul Isle), Wings of the Goddess(Campaign/Fiat Lux/Past zones?), all the add-ons(A crystalline prophecy, a moogle kupo d'etat, a shantotto ascension), Einherjar(?), Chocobo Circuit(?), VNMs, Magian Trials - doesn't sound like any of those work, and a lot of the jobs have glitches. That is a HUGE chunk of content missing.

I guess if you like only doing dynamis, sky, and sea, this server would be for you though..

Is this game still alive lol. I played it when it came out til 2010

i played ffxi for a few years, quite alot, and never got much done lol
i know i had 75 samurai before the 90 cap
then i got 90 samurai and 90 paladin
think i had like 44 war, 40 ninja, 23 summoner (with ifrit), 56 drk, 38 dancer, only rank 5 i think as a galka
that damn 90 cap ruined the game, it basically gave you levels
i loved spending hours doing birds and just zoning out
