Never played XI before and can't be fucked to pay for it; considering playing this.

You probably shouldn't play it. It's honestly at least 5 years too late. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game(my all time favorite MMORPG)(and I've also always thought it does the FF franchise way more justice than people give it credit for), but there are more interesting online RPGs that could fill your time. Most of the people that still play FFXI are the ones just trying to hold on because they have been playing it for so long already, almost like they are trapped in the game. They have invested so much time in it, it's hard to let go. I was one of those people, but just recently got out of it. To accomplish anything in the game, you have to invest so much time in it on a daily basis, otherwise, you'll just be an average player.

You'll never know unless you try it, but I personally wouldn't recommend it these days. Especially on a private server where you can't experience everything the game has to offer. People complain about the regular servers being underpopulated these days, I'd have to imagine that a private server would be 100 times worse.

I have to disagree with this. Being that I played XI from 2004-2011, I think this private server allows the game to be literally 1000x more inviting for newer players to experience the game without wading through the months/years of progression it took us many years ago. Albeit, yes that does negate some of the difficulty which will give the new players a different game experience. But it will also allow them to do in 1 month what it took some of us 6 years to do.

There are around 50-150 players online at all times. All items (non R/ex) are available on AH for 100-100,000g a piece. There are always people available for help.

If anything, for someone wanting to give FFXI a shot.. This is one of the best chances to experience it.

I realize it's older than dirt but so is Diablo II and here I am still playing that ;) I can handle 50-150 people online at any given time, I just wanna try this out. I remember when I was really young and begging my mom to get it for me and her talking about "No our computer's not good enough and I'm not paying a monthly fee blah blah blah."

May as well explore as much content that's available in this free version just to say I have. I'll post up my character once the install's done.

^ Good on you for trying it. Like I said, you'd never know until you tried. And again, I wasn't saying it's a bad game by any means, just because it's old. I just don't think the gameplay has held up as well as say a diablo 2.

And yeah, I played from 2004-2013 off and on. I wouldn't be against trying to play on this private server if I got really bored with other things, but I'm definitely not going back to the real game, even though I still had some things I'd like to accomplish on it. The only reason I'm wary of trying out a private server, is just because it does seem kind of pointless while the actual game servers are still up. The actual game servers are way more reliable, and you never know when the private servers will shut down because the owner just decides he doesn't wanna keep it going anymore, money issues, w/e.

I'm also really curious what you have accomplished in a month that would have taken years of dedication. If you are talking about building a mythic or relic, then that's pretty insane.

Oh for sure, the retail servers are infinitely more reliable. But I have no qualms with this since i'm not paying a monthly fee. And honestly, the server isn't bad at all. it has its days, but usually it will go 6-8 hours without crashing.

I have been playing for almost 5 weeks, and I have:

75 DRK WAR SAM THF PLD WAR NIN

FUll Heca+1
Full Armada

Enough currency to finish Kikoku

100Smithing

Ace's Helm, Hauteclaire, and a couple other high profile drops.

And I only play for 2-3 hours a day. I have had a couple binge days on my day off, but aside from that I play almost casually.

Dear god
i know 1-75 itself took me a month+ of decent xp pties

2-3 hours a day, a casual player would of had a hard time reaching 75
Seeing as it usually took an hour+ just to get into a party
