So, I have had a collection of older RPGs sitting on a shelf for some time, and I haven't beaten any of these. I've played each a little bit just to make sure that the discs are in good condition, but I haven't gotten more than a few hours in on each one. I'm like 95% sure I'm gonna sell my collection of older games on *** pretty soon, since they have just been sitting there, and I also want to make some money. But before I do that, I'd like to beat at least one of these. But, I want some opinions from people that have beaten some of these games. I want to hear the why for whatever game you pick, or maybe even some plus and minuses versus the other games on this list. Anyways, here are the candidates from the games I haven't beaten(in alphabetical order):

Arc the Lad I, II, III (This is the PS1 collection)
Final Fantasy V (PS1)
Final Fantasy VI (PS1)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Front Mission 3 (PS1)
Grandia (PS1)
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth (PS1)
Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu (PS1)
Jade Empire (Xbox)
Kartia: The Word of Fate (PS1)
Lunar: Silver Star Story (PS1)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (PS1)
Megaman Legends (PS1)
Parasite Eve (PS1)
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PS1)
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (PS1)
Shenmue (DC)
Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1)
Stella Deus (PS2)
Suikoden (PS1)
Suikoden III (PS2)
Vagrant Story (PS1)
Wild Arms (PS1)
Xenogears (PS1)

I know that's a pretty big list, but I kind of got out of the RPG game as I was buying these and started getting into other types of games, so they really collected dust more than anything. I just feel like I need to beat at least one of those before I sell them and the systems all off!

The poll can't fit all of those, so the ones I put on the poll are probably the ones that I am more inclined to play myself. But, I'm more interested in the posts in here rather than the poll result anyways, so that doesnt' mean something on the poll will be the one I could pick.

Grandia. I loved that game. Should look into Thousand Arms (PS1). My all time favorite RPG.

Jade empire and megaman legends are games you don't want to miss imo. The combat in both games is great, building a character with great martial art styles that compliment each other is pretty satisfying in jade empire, it's also paced well.

I loved megaman legends, collecting all the little hidden bits for upgrades was tons of fun when i first got it. It's a can't miss for a megaman fan.

Of your poll options i'd say xenogears and parasite eve. Xenogears mech progression is tons of rpg fun. Parasite eve is also pretty original experience, haven't played much of anything that played like it since. Think some later final fantasies kinda tried its combat system kinda.

Shenmue is good but you won't finish it, It's a beast of a game that requires you to stay ahead of the time based events. You could just waste your entire alotted gametime working his jobs or at the arcade.

Wild arms 1 is long and fuckin hard, 2 and 3 are way better. suikodens were fun too.

You're not going to go wrong. That list is pretty encompassing, but I'd say if you can get a copy of valkyrie profile start with that. If you're going to be playing the game on an actual ps 1 you're probably going to have some trouble finding a copy, as it was released like 2 months before ps2 hit the streets and is pretty expensive. If you're planning on emulating a game do yourself a favor and at least check it out.

/e

I didn't answer your question

FFXII is a no brainer for the #1 on that list imo. For one reason or another it does not get the acclaim of the older ones, and was totally forgotten about with the very mercurial reviews of XIII.

I have Valkyrie Profile on the PS1, and have beaten it. I think it's probably the best RPG I've ever played.

While I appreciate the input, I'm just looking to hear about the games on that list guys. The point of this, is that I already own all of those games mentioned, but haven't beat any of them. I'm not looking to buy new games. Before I most likely sell them, I just wanted to hear which out of those would be the most worthwhile according to people who have played them.

You can't blame people for attempting to toss in their $.02 when you bring up classic rpg titles....:)

Also you quoted me and deleted the edit.... If you're just looking off of the list from the poll then go with Xenogears.

Hard choice honestly, but in the poll list, quite a few I played in the past and remember quite well, which is a good sign, so in order, of what I liked.

Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1) I loved this game soo much, was great and entertaining.
Xenogears (PS1) Loved this game, my username was born from this :)
Front Mission 3 (PS1) this game, too good :)

I didnt like vagrant story back in the day.
Never played Grandia 1, loved Grandia 2 or 3 though.
Suikoden 1 was great, but its only to prepare yourself to suikoden 2 and make it shine.
Dont bother with Suikoden 3 ++++, they sucked imo.
Lunar was quite fun, if you can handle the graphics.
FFV was okay, FFVI was great, FFVII was also great.

^ Interesting, because I think I usually hear that Suikoden III is the best in the series.

As of now after thinking a bit more about it myself and reading posts, I think I've narrowed the list a bit to:

Front Mission 3 (I really enjoy Tactical RPGs, and the characters in the game always looked interesting to me)
Grandia (I actually had a file maybe like 5-10 hours deep on it, but my memory card got corrupted. And I have beaten the 2nd one on DC, and I really liked it and what I've played of 1)
Parasite Eve (I always thought this game looked very original, which is a huge draw for me)
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (I had a short lived file that was on the corrupted memory card as well, and I thought it was pretty interesting as well, I think the more recent Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games are a little too punk/emo, but this one wasn't too over the top imo)
Star Ocean: The Second Story (The combat is fun, and the characters look really interesting, so did the atmosphere of the couple hours I played on it. And, I've beaten Til the End of Time on PS2 and really liked it)
Vagrant Story (Made by the creators of Final Fantasy Tactics which is by far my favorite FF, and I remember that the combat was really unique, and it was almost a dungeon crawler. It also had a really dark moody atmosphere that felt good)
Xenogears (Seems like this one almost has a cult following of very loyal fans, which is the reason I bought it. I have actually beaten the first Xenosaga on PS2, though I'm not sure how it compares, but I liked it enough)

Also I've officially cut out the Final Fantasy titles, Hoshigami, and Wild Arms off my list.

I've actually played about half of both FFV and FFVI already, but I think I'm just looking for something different than FF right now after thinking about it a little more(FFXII the same applies obviously). Hoshigami, while it looks like a decent strategy game, perhaps just a little too generic, and maybe somewhat of a FFT rip off clone. And since Wild Arms is supposed to be ridiculously difficult and time consuming, I think I'll look elsewhere.

Appreciating all the insights so far!

Have you not beat Xenogears before? I'll say it outright, probably one of those most frustrating games I've ever played if you're going for a perfect or near-perfect playthrough, but also the most rewarding. Up until now I'd found Final Fantasy Tactics to be the most rich in terms of character development, plot development, overall feel, yada yada, but this game takes the cake. Similar to Tactics in the sense that the developers didn't hold back and it touches down on a lot of shit like philosophy, various religions, death, time. My second choice would've been Star Ocean 2 'til I notice little old Xenogears sitting at the bottom of the poll. If you plan on playing the physical copy, be ready to drop kick your Playstation and if you're emulating, get in touch with me for tips on the 2-3 parts of the game where shit glitches out.

Not your standard Attack, Magic, Item, Escape RPG and the whole "Gears" and futuristic "anime" feel makes for a very cool atmosphere.
