I'm not entirely sure on this either, but it would make sense if the maximum defense were 1236 according to the following:
Base defense = 275
Ethereal base defense = int(275*1.5) = 412
Final defense = 412 * 3 = 1236

The thing I'm a little unsure of is whether the ethereal defense bonus is applied before or after the enhanced defense bonus, but having it this way around definitely makes more sense to me and it works for the 199ed armor that you've got, something the other order does not work for!

825 is max for noneth, so i guess it's 825*1.5 = 1237.5 => 1237 or 1238?!
