People pay a subscription because they expect a game to have one. It doesn't cost shit to pay their employees and run the servers. Blizzard could pay everyone in their company and keep the servers running for every one of their games for like 5+ years on purchases for D3 alone.

Cash shops are where most of the money for F2P games come in (sides from box and digital sales).

People usually dump a lot of their money into things like clothes, and skins. This takes advantage of the RP community mostly, which is in fact, the biggest community in any MMO"RPG".

In Guild Wars 2's case, they not only supply skins and clothes, but other items as well, including "gems", which is an attempt to legally conduct RMT, while preventing RMT by other companies.

Uh, what. How much do you think servers cost to run? Not everyone in Blizzard company is making $300,000+ a year. When you make a quarter of a billion dollars from boxed sales. You can afford to pay your employees and keep shit online.
