Obviously, any team that makes the playoffs has some chance to win. These are just some historical trends that make it look like it would be a major anomaly for the Eagles to win-
Since the 2002 realignment (beginning of our current format) there have been 15 Super Bowls:
The season prior to each Super Bowl Championship year:
No champion was coming off a losing season (Eagles are now)
13 out of 15 made the playoffs (Giants are the 2 that didn't)
8 out of 15 made the divisional round
The 3 seasons prior to their Super Bowl win:
No champion had two losing seasons out of the previous 3 years (Eagles have)
13 out of 15 had won at least 1 playoff game in the previous 3 years (Eagle haven't) (Giants, Saints are the 2 that didn't)
---The Eagles last playoff win was Jan 2009 (9 seasons ago). Only 3 teams since the merger have won a SB after 9 seasons without a playoff win ( '81 49ers, '83 Redskins, '99 Rams)---
Conclusion: The team that wins the SB tends to be a team that had some recent playoff success.
Those 2 Giants teams are the outliers. Without those, the correlation would be almost airtight.
****Disclaimer: I just looked this up on the fly so if I made a mistake somewhere, feel free to point it out.
No way?!
