The Steelers have struck a deal with ex-Jaguars offensive tackle Guy Whimper, the team said Monday.
Whimper, who turns 30 later this month, provides depth behind Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert, who are expected to start at tackle. Whimper (6-5, 302) has made 19 starts at right tackle in the last two seasons; should he make the Steelers’ roster, he could be the first tackle off the bench.
It’s unclear how the Steelers will line up at the tackle spots in 2013, but Whimper is ideally a right tackle and would only likely get a look on the left side if Pittsburgh were in a pinch.
Max Starks, who was Pittsburgh’s starting left tackle in 2012, remains unsigned. He could appeal to another looking for a short-term option on the left side, and it’s conceivable the Steelers could again call upon him if injuries were to strike. PFT added Starks to its “All-Unemployed Team” on Sunday.
The Steelers also announced the signing of undrafted rookie linebacker Terence Garvin, who tried for the team this weekend. With Garvin and Whimper joining the roster, the Steelers waived defensive tackle Anthony Rashad White and center Ivory Wade. White and Wade were undrafted free agents.
