Why wouldn't you use heat? Stretches for strengthening, heat to bring the blood flow to heal, ice afterwards to slow the swelling.
If you have swelling or inflamed joints, blood will only cause more pain. Icing will restrict the blood flow, reducing the pain. If you're cramping, then use heat.
I used a heating pad twice on my back before surgery and it felt like a balloon was inflated.

I was diagnosed with Scoliosis as a kid but I haven't had it checked out in years, it was only a slight curve which makes my left side of the back sit higher than my right.
Probably compressed my spine when I was sitting in a bad position on the way back from Hershey Park last night.
Do you know anyone with an inversion table?
