The crowd swelled out the door of Grays Harbor District Court Monday. Family and friends of the Aberdeen man stabbed to death in Hoquiam over the weekend, as well as those of the 16-year-old accused of stabbing him, sat quietly together on the benches of the small courtroom, or peered in through the windows, straining to hear at the teen’s first court appearance.
Teddy Joseph McKay Bryan of Aberdeen is charged with second-degree murder. The killing, early Saturday morning, came after a dispute over Bryan’s girlfriend, according to court papers. The teen alternately stared at Judge Stephen Brown and hung his head deep into his chest as the charges were read and bail was set at $500,000. Both families filed into the hall before many began crying and hugging.
Bryan already has a violent criminal history, with convictions for assault, malicious mischief and possession of a controlled substance. He was expelled from Aberdeen High School Feb. 7 for possession of a dangerous weapon and making threats, according to court documents.
The Hoquiam Police Department continues to investigate the death of Favro, a corrections officer at Washington Corrections Center in Shelton. New details have emerged since initial information releases over the weekend.
At about 3 a.m. Saturday, a Hoquiam officer spotted Favro’s 2010 Chevy Cobalt high-centered on an embankment near 28th Street and Bay Avenue. The car was empty, but a bloody knife was on the road near the driver’s side door, which also had blood on it, according to police reports. Down the road, a shoe and a knife sheath with blood on it were also on the road.
According to court records, a woman flagged down officers as they searched the area and said her son had called her and said, “I’m about to do something stupid, you better get over here.”
Bryan was found nearby and told officers he fought with Favro near his girlfriend’s apartment, court documents stated. Bryan said he had been at a party with his girlfriend, who is 20, and was angry that Favro had been touching her, the documents continued.
Bryan told officers he had seen his girlfriend and Favro in the car outside her apartment and went downstairs with a knife to confront Favro. Bryan said he punched him through the driver’s side window, and when Favro fought back, he “instinctively stabbed downward” into Favro’s thigh. Bryan said Favro then drove off, crashing a short distance away. The girlfriend was later interviewed and confirmed that Bryan was hitting Favro.
A release from Hoquiam police adds that Favro had also been stabbed high in his chest on his left side. After the car got stuck in the embankment, the police report states he exited the car and ran away. He fell near an alley on the 2800 block between Bay and Pacific avenues, where he was later found by police. He showed no signs of life and was unresponsive to attempts to revive him. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Bryan allegedly returned to his girlfriend’s apartment, the police release continued, where he rinsed the knife and changed his clothes, which he said he would discard.
An autopsy found Favro died of his stab wounds.
Even admits to trying to wash away evidence and discard clothing.
