Almost spot on, actually.
Realistically, Andre Johnson probably has three more productive years left in him. DeAndre Hopkins doesn't strike me as anything special or a future number one because he doesn't have game-changing speed, but he does have great hands and can become a go-to guy in the red zone. He can also make the occasional big play down the field because of his good leaping ability to go along with his solid hands.
That leaves us with Keshawn Martin, who's never really developed into anything worthwhile. I remember when people were calling him a potential playmaker in the slot but he has been horrible during his two seasons with the Texans. I still have high hopes for DeVier Posey if he can stay healthy and continue to improve. If we have a reliable running game again with a healthy Arian Foster in 2014 we can probably become a productive offense again regardless of who our quarterback is.
The bottom line is 2013 wasn't fun but we were quite competitive in most of those losses even without Arian Foster. It wasn't long ago when Matt Schaub was having some success at quarterback. We did go 12-4 and won a playoff game the year before. If not for a 1-3 collapse at the end of 2012, after we had the NFL's best record at 11-1, we could have clinched the first seed in the AFC Playoffs.
I feel like we have a good team if we're healthy and play hard. Our defense has to force more turnovers.
The Texans defense forced an NFL record low 11 turnovers in 16 games during 2013. That's pathetic.
We also need a better pass rush. Our front seven needs an infusion of talent. Defensively we are thin.
Defense, defense and more defense would be my strategy going into this draft. A QB sprinkled in somewhere.
Our general manager Rick Smith can probably pluck an undrafted free agent running back that turns into a future All Pro.
And we really only need a serviceable back who can become a new 1-2 punch with Arian Foster, aka replacing Ben Tate.
