Winners:
Oakland Raiders - There was a lot going on in the top 4 picks. Started off with 2 vanilla picks and then Jacksonville came and created an uproar with Bortles. Then Cleveland sitting there and all this talk about Johnny and boom, traded to the Bills (see below in losers). Meanwhile, the Raiders just sat still, didn't panic and landed the top prospect (in my opinion) in this draft. They're going to use Khalil Mack just how Denver uses Von Miller. The Raiders just got a MASSIVE boost to their defense. I said it last night and I'll say it again, nothing personal Raider buzzins but I really wish I could have seen Mack on a team who's going to run a 3-4 primarily.
Cleveland Browns - The Browns make a great move by trading down with the Bills and then made a silly move (at the time, explained in a minute) by moving one spot up with the Vikings and then finished off a solid night by trading up again for Johnny Football. First thing, the trade with the Bills. That was a great move, they didn't want Sammy or Mack, they got a first and fourth rounder to move down and just won that trade by a significant amount. Then they go and move from 9 to 8 to draft Justin Gilbert and give up a 5th to do so. When this first happened I was very confused because there was no way the Vikings were taking Gilbert. But now today it makes sense. I have to imagine someone (likely the Lions) was trying to leapfrog the Browns to get Gilbert. So when the Browns found out, they came in with a better offer to the Vikings. I doubt the Vikings would ever have traded with the Lions because if they did, there was always the chance that the Lions take Barr and the Browns take Gilbert leaving the Vikings kind of fucked. Anyway, that's why the Browns move up with the Vikings wasn't so bad with some thought on it. Finally drafting Johnny Manziel. I don't mind them trading up to get him, better safe than sorry and only cost them a third. We all know what Johnny is about and Cleveland is a great fit for him. He's got plenty of weapons, a solid OL and a stout defense. This could be the start of something scary in Cleveland.
Minnesota Vikings - I kind of touched on the Vikings a lot in the Browns breakdown so I'm not going to go over the trade with the Browns too much. They moved from 8 to 9 and got Anthony Barr. Many may ask how he'll fit in the Vikings base 4-3 because he's not the best fit at DE but much like the Raiders with Mack, I believe the Vikings are going to use Barr just like Denver uses Von Miller (seem's to be a trade with 4-3 teams now). They can still always use him as a DE, he'll probably be just fine but using him as a Von style guy will be better. Well that was the Vikings first round pick....oh wait, they gave up their second and fourth to the Seahawks to draft Teddy Bridgewater. No big deal, just landed their franchise quarterback at #32 along with an elite pass rushing talent which they desperately needed. Vikings won day 1 without any doubt in my mind.
Green Bay Packers - The Packers, in traditional Packers' fashion, sat still, didn't move and made a pick. They landed one of the top safeties in this draft which was the top area they needed to address. I'm personally not a huge fan of Clinton-Dix but I also understand why he was so highly rated. This was a huge pick for the Packers and it's going to provide an immediate boost to their secondary.
Losers:
Buffalo Bills - The Bills needed to get EJ Manuel a weapon but they gave up too much to move up for Sammy. Others will disagree but a first and a fourth to move 5 spots for a receiver just seems ridiculous to me. They did redeem themselves some by getting that 4th back today (traded Stevie Johnson to the Niners for a 2015 4th) so it essentially came down to Sammy for a 2015 first. I just don't like it because they already had Stevie, Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin which is a solid, young trio. So now they have Sammy, Woods and Goodwin, is that really a whole lot better? I mean it's likely going to be better but is it good enough to give up a potential top 10 pick next year? I say no.
Miami Dolphins - Well this is kind of a meh loss. The Dolphins said all along that they liked James a lot and had a first round grade on him. Well, they weren't lying, the only problem is that they were the only ones to have that first round grade on him. They desperately needed OL help so I can't fault them but there was better talent available at areas of need for them so it's a mini loss but a loss none the less.
Kansas City Chiefs - It's no secret that I do not like Dee Ford. As a second round pick fine, he's solid, but as a first rounder he's just in no way shape or form worthy of it. Put him on a team who doesn't even need him and it's just a fail all around. Sorry Chiefs, shit the bed on this one but I hope it works out for you in the end.
Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals - I can put these two together because it's the exact same situation for both. Picking early 20s, player they want isn't there, trade back, have to reach for a day 2 prospect. They both got stuck doing the exact same thing. It's a loss for both of them but not a huge one. First with the Eagles, they got Marcus Smith, a guy I was very high on for round 2. Smith does fit perfect for the Eagles' defense though and they got another third rounder for it so it's not the end of the world. Same exact thing is said for the Cardinals again. Deone Buccanon is the perfect fit for the Cardinals D, big hard hitting safety who can cover tight ends which was a huge fault in the Cardinals D last year. They picked up and extra third, reached for a second round prospect and were done. Like I said, same story for both, of course both teams are coming out and saying they had first round grades on both players but that doesn't make it right. I don't think either of these picks will be major flops but in the end, they weren't what either team wanted to happen and were both reaches.
