The goal of this thread is to provide a clear understanding of all the specific terminology we use to talk about hockey and sports betting.

Betting TerminologyUpfront (u/f): When a user requests that you send the forum gold for your side of a bet to him/her before the game begins. Often, this is requested before a bet can be confirmed. This is commonly asked of new bettors by trusted/active bettors.
Straight Up (s/u): The bet is not altered by a spread, but may be affected by odds.
Odds: The amount of forum gold placed on the bet is different for you and the person you're betting against. Odds are requested when one team is clearly favoured or at a disadvantage.
An explanation for general odds can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=52262070&f=203Spread: A spread bet allows the bettor to have the opportunity to change the official odds of a game by altering the final score of a given game. You may choose to add or subtract to the final score. Often .5 is added to the spread to eliminate ties. Examples are as follows...
- Leafs +1 vs. Sabres. If the final score was Leafs 1 - Sabres 2, +1 would be added to the Leafs final score as the bet states. Therefore, the final score would become Leafs 2 - Sabres 2, nullifying the bet.
- Leafs +1.5 vs. Sabres. If the final score was Leafs 1 - Sabres 2, +1.5 would be added to the Leafs final score as the bet states. Therefore, the final score would become Leafs 2.5 - Sabres 2, giving Toronto the victory.
- Leafs +2 vs. Sabres. If the final score was Leafs 1 - Sabres 2, +2 would be added to the Leafs final score as the bet states. Therefore, the final score would become Leafs 3 - Sabres 2, giving Toronto the victory.
Spreads can either change the final score of the game, as explained in the samples below, or they can be applied in overtime. A user may ask for an Overtime Spread (+OT). An Overtime Spread stipulates that if the game is tied during the end of regulation, and is forced into overtime, the team with +OT will automatically win the bet [or] the team with -OT will automatically lose the bet.
- Leafs +OT vs. Sabres. If the final score was Leafs 1 - Sabres 2, but the game did not enter overtime, the Sabres won both the game and the bet.
- Leafs +OT vs. Sabres. If the final score was Leafs 1 - Sabres 2, but the game was decided in overtime (or in a shootout), the Leafs lost the game but won the bet.
- Leafs +OT vs. Sabres. If the final score was Leafs 2 - Sabres 1, but the game was decided in overtime (or in a shootout), the Leafs won the game and won the bet.
Automatically Confirmed (ac, a/c, a'c): States that a bet is automatically confirmed regardless of who decides to bet against you, unless you have stipulated otherwise in your post. Users often do this if they will not be on d2jsp to confirm their side of a bet.
- Leafs > Sabres, 100 vs 100 a/c (all bettors, unknown or not, who confirm their side of the bet are thereby confirmed)
- Leafs > Sabres, 100 vs 100 a/c active bettors (only active bettors who confirm their side of the bet are thereby confirmed)
- Leafs > Sabres, 100 vs 100 a/c active+ bettors (only active/trusted/mediator labelled bettors who confirm their side of the bet are thereby confirmed)
Confirmed (cd, c/d, c'd): States that a bet has been confirmed by one of the bettors. Both users must confirm every bet.
Retract: All users are given the opportunity, before the game begins, to withdraw from a bet previously made. However, nobody is allowed to withdraw from a bet made during gameplay.
Betting Game TerminologyThe Snake Game: Bettors choose one team per matchup who they believe will win. Bettors alternate in picking who they believe will win, one at a time, until all games are chosen.
An example of a Snake Game can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=50740041&f=203Over/Under Bet: Bettors choose whether the final score of a given game will be either over or under a predetermined number. The most common staple numbers are: 5, 5.5, 6
An example of an Over/Under bet can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=52493631&f=203Series Bet: Bettors choose which team will win a playoff series. A winner is decided by two teams playing a series, best of 7 games. A team wins the series when they have 4 wins.
Blind Pot: Created by Cratic. Bettors choose which team they believe will win a game chosen by the host. This game is unique because the odds are not revealed until after the game has begun and all participants have paid.
An example of a Blind Pot game can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=52578710&f=203Score Picking Game: Bettors attempt to guess the final score of a game in an attempt to win a large pot, which is built based on entry fees.
An example of the Score Picking Game can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=52569963&f=203Ultimate Survivor: Bettors privately message the host which teams they believe will win every night. The number of picks are determined by the number of games set for each particular night. When a participant choses a team that does not win, they lose a life. Each contestant begins with 3 lives, the last remaining user wins.
An example of the Survivor Game can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=52365265&f=203Player Bet: Bettors each choose a predetermined set of players who they believe will either receive more points, more goals, more assists, etc.
An example of a Player Bet can be found here:
http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=48660636&f=203Parlay Bet: In a parlay bet, you are able to bet a set amount on a certain number of games, usually 3-8, for a certain day. You must correctly pick the winner of each chosen game to win the bet. You receive different odds depending on how many games you chose to bet on. The more games you choose, the higher the odds will be, since the probability of picking the correct winning teams of five, six, seven, eight or more games is increasingly difficult.

http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=52385159&f=203General TerminologyOvertime (ot, o/t): If neither team has won after 3 period of play (20 minutes each), the game will enter into an overtime period (5 minutes)
Continuous Overtime: If neither team has won after 3 period of play (20 minutes each) during playoffs, the game will enter into continuous overtime. Overtime periods in the playoffs are 20 minutes long, rather than the typical 5 minute length seen during the regular season. These 20 minute overtime periods will continually be added until a team scores a goal. Sometimes two or more of these overtime periods are played to determine a winner.
Shootout (so, s/o): If neither team has won after 3 periods of play (20 minutes each) and one period of overtime (5 minutes) both teams will go to a shootout to determine a winner. Shootouts are not implemented during playoffs.
Bandwagon (bw, b/w): When someone decides to cheer for a team simply because they are doing well. This is typically seen when "their team" is not doing well.
Homer: When someone who will only cheer for their favourite team. In their eyes, the team can do no wrong. Homers often overrate their players in comparison to players not on their team.
Active: A bettor who regularly bets in the hockey forum, who is known and trusted by others. To be considered for "Active" status you must be nominated by other bettors as stipulated in the Hockey Rules linked at the bottom of my post.
Trusted: A bettor who has achieved the "Trusted" status in the hockey forum. A trusted bettor may also act as a mediator but is not officially a mediator. They can also handle disputes on the hockey forum. The decision to be labelled Trusted is made by the user. A user must be nominated to be considered for "Trusted" status, which is decided by the "Trusted/Mediator" list.
Mediator: A bettor who has achieved the "Mediator" status in the hockey forum. A mediator is allowed to mediate bets. If two bettors have an "Unknown" bettor status and wish to bet on a game, a mediator should be used to hold both sides of the bet. The mediator will then send the total of both sides to the user who won the bet. They can also handle disputes on the hockey forum.
Bad Mannered (BM): Is used to describe a user who does not behave appropriately. This can include constantly spamming, posting off-topic threads, excessively flaming or personally attacking users in this forum, and in general just not following d2jsp rules.
Good Mannered: Is used to describe a user who does behave appropriately and follows all d2jsp rules. These users are often helpful to new bettors, and
Welch/Welcher: When a bettor does not pay a lost bet. Each user has 24 hours to pay their bets. Rules on welching can be found in the General Hockey Betting Rules, which is linked at the bottom of my post.
