so my computer is running fine at start up but after letting my laptop run for most of the day (not sure when it starts happening; my guess is 6-8 hours or so), my desktop background starts acting up and becomes distorted (images below)..the programs such as the e-book i have opened in the PDF viewer is also distorted but that's a quick fix (only to tab in and out to fix).

how do i fix this? is my laptop overheating? graphics card driver and linux compatibility? bad installation? i've had this laptop for 6 years now and i just recently reformatted my whole system with linux. i shouldn't see a problem in running Linux on an older laptop as I've heard about Linux running comfortably on even older laptops more than twice the age of mine..
