Ok I think this requires a little bit of an explanation..
I recently built this build for my wife:
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/Everything was new except the PSU, the GPU and the HDD all of which I carried over from my wife's old build. I didn't list the PSU in the part list, but I know it is a 500 watt one (don't remember which exact model at the moment)
The HDD was running Vista (I know) which originally came off a prebuilt HP computer many years ago but still works fine and has plenty of memory for my wife (500 GB) so I merely used the "Factory Restore" or whatever to wipe the memory. After I was able to do that, the computer was running pretty flawlessly. I was able to install all the drivers, everything was working great.
However, my USB connection was seemingly causing a BSOD.. This computer is in our living room connected to our big screen TV so with my wife's prior build, she was running a 8 foot (?) USB extension, which was connected to an unpowered USB splitter which had a USB mic, wireless mouse, USB keyboard and webcam all attached to it fine. The strange thing with the new build was that each time I started the computer up with all of those things connected together using the splitter and extension connected to the front USB panel, each time the OS would load, the computer would get a BSOD. I merely came across the temporary "fix" by mistake when I forgot to plug the USB extension in the computer which seemingly allowed the OS to load fine.
So afterwards I started merely only having the mouse and keyboard connected through the splitter & extension combo and for a day or two everything was perfect. The computer started up fine, everything worked once logged in, etc. Last night, however, Windows started to ask for drivers for the two USB connections (mouse and keyboard) and they almost completely stopped working even after restarting the computer once or twice. One or the other would start working for a few moments and then stop. I thought it had something to do with the splitter or extension, so I plugged both directly into the computer for now, however, the computer still asks me for the supposed drivers for the mouse and keyboard (which I don't have and neither does making Windows look online for them help either) and they are still not working properly. Even as I type this, the keyboard works perfectly (despite the "need driver" message) and the mouse doesn't work at all (but it is also asking for a driver for the mouse too)
I am going to install Windows 7 this weekend. Don't ask why I didn't do so to begin with, but has this happened to anyone? I anticipate these problems will disappear when I install Windows 7 since Vista has usually been a complete pain in the ass for these kinds of things, but my wife needs proper access to the computer until I get around to installing the new OS.
