It means how your health is actually related to the damage you take.

i.e. Assume you have 1000 armor and that's 10% damage reduction

and you have 1000 life.

technically, will be able to take 1100 damage before you die

Its your effective health pool

Its the total cumulative score of all of your armor statistics, health, armor, res, dodge, etc
