is the computer turned on at least? and is the monitor connected to the graphics card and takes power from the wall?

my ghx card only has dvi ports and my monitor is vga, i could try plugging my lcd tv with my hdmi to my ghx card, would that work?

You need to plug it into your graphics card.

yeah try it also check if your graphics card came with a vga to dvi adapter, if it did, use it.
