Currently running an XFX 7850 Double D with 2GB vram.

Would crossfiring this card when a deal pops on another one be advisable for futureproofing or would you just recommend going a few tiers up to let's say a 680 or 690 in the future?

Give your current pc config.
New series of card scale very well in most of cases. While the performance can raise by 100% there are some problems with sli/crossfire which you can google, e.g driver conflicts, lack of support in some titles, artifacts and so on.
If one 7850 is not enough and your cpu, mobo and psu are capable of one more card, go ahead. Just make sure your favorite titles run well on crossfire as you might even get performance decrease compared to single card (yes it can actually get worse performance than single card at some cases)

you'd be better off selling it and getting a better gpu...

1 good gpu > 2 decent gpus.. this is because you will never get 100% performance increase..ever

You want something like a 670 or a 7950/7970

I get over 100% performance increase with Metro 2033 using Sli 650TiB. I believe in 1-2 other titles I get a huge boost 100%+ as well.

Can the same be said for the 7850?

And thats a 100+ increase in 2 or 3 titles.. in most it's only like a 50-75% increase if they even accept sli

a 670 vs a 7850 xfire the 670 is obviously better same w/ the 7970 or even a 7950

I haven't gotten any less than 85-90% performance increase in any of the later titles, with an exception to F1 Racing. Not worth going CF with the 7850 imho.

This is normal now, read some reviews...
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/his-iceq-x2-7970-7950-7850_10.html#sect5
And it keeps on par with a l'il oc'ed 7970, but then the minimum fps and all the multi-gpu problems remind about themselves
