I selected the RAM because it has quicker timings at 8-8-8-24. The math says that I'd save an average of 5 seconds each day with the quicker timings, which is completely negligible, but for $15 more it makes me feel better that the all around system is a cut above I guess? lol

I want to at least keep 650 watts on the PSU - the GTX 670 is pretty beasty, and if it overclocks itself and my CPU turbo-boosts I want to make sure that I still have some watt-draw to maintain the bronze rating on it.

I don't need a HDD! :)

Thanks for taking a look at it

you wont notice the ram performance at all. not worth the extra $15 imo. if it makes you feel better, then thats fine too.

yes the 670 is a beast but it also consumes less power. less than the 500 series.

At this point I wouldn't mind chipping out the extra $30 for the two completely marginal upgrades.

This system is such an upgrade to my current system, which died a couple weeks ago. Had 1440x900 display with a Q8300 oc'd to 2.65 ghz, 32-bit windows with4 GB DDR2-800, a 5770, and a 5 year old low-quality hard drive. Running GW2 on this new system is going to completely blow me away.

itll play guild wars 2 with ease. when you get the free borderlands 2 with the 670, you should definitely push it. borderlands 2 is more intense than expected.

450W or more are completely sufficient for almost any kind of OCing on CPU or GPU side as long as you run only one of each and do not go for ~5 GHz and liquid nitrogen...

Try to get a modular 450+ W PSU with high efficiency instead of your 650W one... as far as RAM goes, the 9-9-24 timings are definitely enough. You won't feel the difference and I even doubt the 5 seconds of saved time each day^^

EDIT:

Also, I don't know about other countries, but I am pretty sure that - like in Germany - you could get Windows 7 (probably Office as well) cheaper than 150$... if not, go for a random Amazon version of W7 and use Open Office :)

The Motherboard I was planning on purchasing now includes a free gift of RAM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313080

This RAM requires 1.65 V - will my MB recognize that and adequately power it automatically or will I need to manually adjust? Are there any other complications?

I'm definitely going to use it if I can - paying $15 more for better RAM is one thing, but since this is free I'm going to save that $55.

The motherboard will recognize the ram itself. If not, just adjust it in the bios. I say spend $40 on ram unless youre satisfied with the free ram.

not quite true. a high cpu and gpu can easily require 450w alone.
