But I do not have a genuine version of windows 8.1
Since you can buy windows 8.1 for like $50 some places would I have to do a clean install of windows 8 to make my copy genuine to upgrade to windows 10?

You can get a key for 8.1 for like $18 on /r/microsoftsoftwareswap

All you would need to do is input the key to activate it is enter the key. From there, just run Windows Update and get Windows 10.
