Whenever I start up my PC for the first time of the day, and my desktop is loading, the internet icon on the bottom right of the screen (Windows 7) just gets stuck trying to connect to the internet, and I can click on other things like Google Chrome but nothing will open. It won't even shut down when I click shut down, even after leaving it 5 minutes. When I shut it down by holding the power button and restart it, it's quick as a flash and no problems for the rest of the day.

Another thing, perhaps unrelated but...

Every time I boot up and logon onto my user and the desktop loads, I get a popup from OpenOffice.org (which I have never used, don't even know what it's doing on my PC). It says:

Either another instance of OpenOffice.org is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Do you really want to continue?

Just thought that was strange since I can't remember ever even opening that program before.

Anyone got any suggestions?

well first off, if you don't want open office, uninstall it.
To be painfully honest: anyone who has an unwanted application starting multiple times without their permission prob has malware as well, so deal with that.

Also check for multiple network connections and remove all but one of them.
