Hello my fellow D2jsp Computer Hardware Discussion comrades, I am sorry, but as of late I have kept all but some of you in the dark as to my plans to under go my latest project. Though I have been thinking about under going a project of this magnitude for many weeks, I was only pushed to commence out of utter bored-ness. As most of you know, my P6T motherboard is at ASUS HQ getting a audio issue repaired. Due to this, my mind has been going crazy, like a ADD kid without Ritalin, and my hands have been idle. Everyone knows: Idle hands are the Devil's play things. Oh goodness... what have I done....

As you may have already guessed, the idea was to create a home server for my files. My main goal was to be able to store my movies/music and stream them on any computer in my network. Being that this is the first time I have ever attempted to do something like this; I received some help ( actually it was a lot, but I don't want it to go to their egos :P ) in terms of what to get and how to run it. So here's my special thanks in advance to the following people:

Eek: Feedback on the parts, random pieces of advice and of course, planting the little seed in my head that I needed one... Damn you Eek! (Oh, I forgot, he also gave me one of his famous webcam strips - FOR FREE!)
rockonkenshin: Feedback on the parts, ideas on how to set it up (different operating systems) and hopefully advice on actually getting it up and running.

Now that that's out of the way; on to the pictures, shall we?

(Note: as I write this (Friday night/Saturday morning) the case has not arrived yet, expecting it some time next week)

The parts that have arrived. Everything except the case.

To those that are aware of the "table situation" - this is it. My mom finally let me have it after I stopped asking her for it (women are strange creatures). It's white (as you can see), it has a big storage area (with a door), a small slot for random things (such as a keyboard) and it's perfect for my closet to hold this server. Best of all it's free.

So the first thing I do when assembling a computer for the first time is check to see that the different hardware is working. I start off by assembling it on a table without the case. Here we go:

Here is the motherboard, what a beautiful one. Gigabyte did a fabulous job of visual presentation with the various colors and their logo in the metallic gold. She's tiny too... this is my first M-ATX motherboard.

Here is a shot with the CPU inside the socket. Very smooth closure, tight, without having to jam it closed.

Picture with the thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5) applied, nice evenly spread out coat. Better then that stock garbage.

Heat sink and fan installed. Don't worry, I did not forget to wipe the pre-applied thermal paste off. I had purchased some 99% Isopropyl solution (top right corner of picture) to do just that. I had read that the push pins were difficult to install... I think those guys were retards. Couldn't have been easier.

Here is the nice G.Skill ram I bought. I actually prefer the heat spreaders on these better then on my DDR3 OCZ Platinums. The color and quality of it is absolutely amazing.

RAM installed, probably the easiest thing to do when assembling a computer.

Just to show you how small this board is, I decided to insert my Sapphire 4870 in the PCI-E slot.
*Just for the sake of not wasting possible images, I will only link these pictures for those who are interested*

So, after that there is nothing left to install besides plugging stuff in. Here is the power supply and the two hard drives connected. I also dug out my old HP keyboard for my first boot into BIOS.

Here is my mysterious 50$ purchase. 3 cables... fucking overpriced. 14 Gauge Extension cord, 6 outlet power bar and a CAT6 ethernet cable.

Finally, the main reason why I wanted this table... it's so handy!

I'm tempted to do that to be honest. I would have to use my antec 900 and rearrange everything... which is something I don't really want to do. I'll consider it tomorow (unless you'd play a game like ... in 30 minutes). That's how long it would take to get it up and going. LMK if you're down for that.
