avoid beats and skullcandy.

i have the audio technica m30 which is quite good, but below the range youre looking at. maybe try the m50? its about 100, i think.

sennheisers in that range should also be really good.

Grado SR-80i are great and they're excellent for listening to metal. Pretty much anything Sennheiser makes is good, but their headphones tend to be a bit "loose" in the sound, great for laid back stuff, jazz, and 70s-80s mixes, but a bit bass-heavy and not as responsive as you want for a lot of more recent productions.

...and yeah, avoid Beats and Skullcandy.

No problem here believe me I know how overpriced and horrible the sound quality is in these headphones

my roommate is the local rep for beats by dr dre. they are mixed way bass heavy and seem to be for people who buy $300 headphones to listen to MP3s. audio technica are my favorite headphones for the money. once had some AKG headphones that also sound really well for even less.

edit: she also represents the lady gaga headphones (heartbeats). their cutting technology "broadcast bullets
of sound right through your ears and into your heart." supposedly they were designed by lady gaga -clearly the most qualified person one could find.
