Understandable, but why does today's surge in music have to be pop music?
Honestly, all of the pop songs I hear on the radio have to same old beats and same old notes. Plus they all sound horrible, not using real instruments and even their own voices, having to rely on computer-generated beats and autotuned voices.
In my opinion, this genre is already dying
Voices were autotuned well before the songs now, however they didn't use it to acheive the "T-pain" sounding effect on the voice. Autotune was simply used for its namesake - to tune a vocalist's notes to the correct pitches but the difference was that until today the use of the effect was not supposed to be noticed. Also computer-generated beats and synthesizers etc have been around for even longer than autotune. Many popular songs from the 80s used synths.
Many people seem to forget that pop music is an abbreviation for popular. If there was no redeeming quality to the music, why would anyone enjoy it - let alone have it stand as the most popular genre? The fact is that pop tunes are catchy and melodic, and whether or not you choose to believe it gives you individuality to say you don't like pop music, the majority of people do enjoy it. My two favorite genres are varying forms of techno and hardcore/metalcore, yet I'll admit that I enjoy listening to Katy Perry when I'm at a party. If it is so easy and formulaic to make this kind of music (and in turn, millions of dollars), please post your own music video of an original pop hit. Shouldn't take you long, just use the same old beats and the same old notes. Doesn't even need to sound good according to you.

talent in anything never goes down over time. certain practices or methods just become outdated.
I agree with this post. The popular genres of music will change with the time but the amount of good singers/songwriters out there hasn't diminished. There are still plenty of good vocalists you can find who sing well WITHOUT the use of autotune when they are doing a live performance, and great instrumentalists can be found all over as well.
