It completely depends on you. If you haven't played the game before, you should for sure check it out.

Play a couple toons till level 20, see if it's something you'd enjoy.

do i get any benefits from buying the game when it came out in 2011?

If you have the game purchased, yeah you get some perks and bonuses for being a "founder" i think it is.

Extra credit limit, small perks that f2p doesn't get.
