what chars are good to make as first character/item finder?

well for mf a sorc or an hammerdin are nice chars to start with easy to build and nice damage

Starting off with no fg I say a sorc because they got tele and cheap to make a decent mfer but if you want to spend fgs then def a hammerdin and get a nigma

If you want to gear up your char quickly and cheaply sorc is proboby you best bet.

I've had a lot of luck with strafers too. They can run pits decently with gear you get while leveling. With 0mf in an 85 level zone you get a decent number of whites and eths I've found. If you aren't planning on spending any fg to gear they are great... If you can stand repeating pits again and again
