I bought Diablo 2 the week it came out so many years ago, but it didn't really become the perfect game to me until after LOD.

I love how you can construct characters. I love how drops are are all randomly calculated, but you can fight against your bad drops with the right knowledge.
Can't get a good glove drop? try crafting some.
Can't get a good ammy? gamble that gold!
Good armor isn't dropping? Check out some of the budget runewords and farm the countess for a while.
Hit a plateau in your damage output? Try infinity on your merc (caster) find some crushing blow (melee)
if you aren't getting good charms you can try rerolling them with your extra diamonds
Stuff like this makes D2 is the perfect game for me.

Like I said before though, D2 didn't become amazing until after LOD, which gives me hope for Diablo 3 still.

can't agree more

for me probably it's also a slight feeling of nostalgia mixed up with the seemingly simple but quite deep game mechanics

d2 is hands down, the most action involved game ever made. there's no way to play it without clicking your mouse to death (I've been going through them at a rate of about 1 per year, but can't remember the last time I paid for one: thank you manufacturers warranty). if you pvm, you're going to wear the paint off you alt key in a matter of months. it's a luddite friendly computer game; you don't need a supermachine to play it and you're going to destroy your hardware doing so.

and people still play when pvp has been flooded with modders and hackers?

All that shit does is make me want to slam those bastards with legit items and laugh at them.

This game brings the thrill that D3 failed to accomplish.
Balance over powered with even more over powered.
Every class is overpowered in their own right
endless pvp options
the fact that you HAVE the option to do many many different and pretty viable builds, with an overwhelming amount of items, stats, synergies etc in your arsenal, the replayability is literally endless with this major fact.

The fact that Magic Finding is actually fun in this game, its randomly generated items, its literally a gamble after every boss, and we always see that unidentified ring and think 'It just could be it..' Usually we get sad when we see a lowly level 17 unique ring, but when that SoJ appears, its just an awesome feeling.

Mix in the overwhelming joy of seeing that HR drop, making runewords, and pvp - its truly a perfected game that has and will age well.

I've had more fun solo playing d2 than I have playing d3, D3 in its own right was fun - for the first week, and only with friends.

D2 has that lovely nostalgia effect that we all love and enjoy.

I agree with what everyone is saying...I'm pretty sure I've spent more time theorizing about item/char builds than I have actually playing the game. I must say though the game changed like crazy at the 1.10 patch and I'm not sure I would have stuck with it for so long without those massive changes, before that there wasn't near as many build options and the hacked items were just stupid. I bring that up because it took them years to get to that point with D2 and I haven't played D3 yet because I know it will get to that point someday too and I have no desire to play it until it does. Once it does though I'm sure it will end up being the sequel we all wanted in the first place.
