The damage of the bone fetish/stygian doll is affected only by the number of players in game.
According to the same article you quoted, the physical damage is affected by any Deadly Strike the doll has.
The number of players in the game is only relevant because dolls will get more hp, thus do more damage due to the explosion being proportionate to their life.
