Witch/summoner.. Good Starter but no one likes you.
Marauder/2hMaul..Good Start, Can take some damage
Ranger/Lightning arrow bow..Good Start, Easy to build and gear for lvling
Templar/Cleaver..Can be tricky but Sword and Board

If your wanting a Summoner build.. Your best chance is to check the Witch subforum on PoE website for different builds that people have made.

Stuff you should keep: All orbs and gemcutters prism's.. the biggest mistake new players make is not knowing the value of an orb. Then wasting it on useless items or trading for unfair trades.
------Try to save your orbs till your in merciless mode.

Google "Poeex info" It at times seems to be outdated but it gives you an idea of what is worth what ((dont exchange currency through the NPC)). Also follow the forum or ingame trades of currency.

Keep all items that are unique, even the lowest level items can be worth a bit.

The kind of stats people look for in items are:
~Life/Mana
~Physical Damage or Elemental Damage % or mods
~Resistances
~Cast speed/Attack Speed
~Movement Speed
And High armor value

since it is your first char

save anything to do with ORBS and or other currency items rather, waste them as you will obviously make mistake with this char and want to make new toon when u figure out how things work
