but would claw block not take dura?

If hit with a physical combat skill that a shield can block (and smite) then yes
All ranged attacks and all attacks without physical deliverage won't decrease durability.

since you would be running a shield with it anyway, and 2x noneths in the claw/claw swap, there is no downside. It means your claw/claw can use -req jewel and the eth rare can use a rare jewel
