before lvl 60 you can pretty much do everything you want without being "useless"
if you hit lvl 60 you really need the gear (every melee class is really gear dependent by default)
for inferno, try to get over 10k dmg,40k life and as much res as possible
you need either a weapon with a socket (for life on hit) or life on hit... base dmg is important but try to not get the highest blue dps weapon but something with dex (as it boosts your damage,armor and dodge) and vita
every item you have should have some resists if possible
all of your gear should fit together to have all the stats you need at a high enough lvl..
if you want i can make a screenshot of every piece of gear i have
