i cant say iv driven an automatic vette or any other brand new auto but out of the autos iv owned i can shift my Si just as fast if not faster. now a sequential gearbox is a diff story, im thinking some of yall are confusing an auto with a sequential. they are 2 very diff things. a regular automatic doesn't use a real clutch and the guts of the trans are completely diff from a manual, theres all kinds of belts and centrifically driven gears and an whole assload other moving parts, also many diff auto designs. a manual is very simple its a bunch of gears that interlock with each other. A real F1 style sequential gearbox is in simple terms a manual trans with a computer controlled clutch, and yes they can shift faster that any person could even dream of.
actually i have driven an auto vette, i forgot about it. it was a ligenfelter modded C5 owned by my friends father, was like 10 yrs ago tho i didnt know much about cars then.

I done my work experience place at Royal Mail, its the british postal service. Their lorries have autos and every single driver hates them. there set up economically. If your fully laden and have 37 tonne in the back of your truck, you need to put your foot down at a junction to get away. however the rev counter has a green and red section. If you over rev it, and go out into the red, it will wait for it to drop back down to the green section before selecting the next gear. it sucks so much. Leaves you in the middle of a rounabout, coasting, whilst the revs drop back into the green and select the next gear.
sounds like a really crappy auto there

i hear they detune auto ver of cars to protect the tranny
depends on the car, i dont think they actually take away power in most cases they just make the auto tougher to handle high power. doesnt matter tho any way u look at an automatic trans they suck. all auto's have a shit load more moving parts than a manual and are more likely to break because of it. alot of them dont even have real toothed gears like a manual they use belts and centrifically driven devices that tell them when to shift based on throttle input.
i can see autos being good for some drag cars, but pretty sure all the badd ass funny cars and top fuel's use 3 speed manuals, they dont shift like ur normal H pattern manual tho they have a lever to pull for each gear if i recall.
