Some feeders. Half to be sold, half are held back as future breeders and feeders for my own snakes.

I am currently keeping a 7:1 female to male ratio in two cages. My thrid cage is used for feeders/future breeders. Those that become pregnant in my third cage will be tossed in with my breeding cages I will be purchasing more cages as I'm producing much more than I have need for. The idea is to start selling to local shops and snake breeders. Here is the cost from when I started:
Quote (Vereor @ Feb 23 2013 04:44pm)

current costs;
cages - $15/ea  totaling $60
Bag of feed - $25.  40lb bag, i havent even put a dent in it yet.
Bag of pine shavings - $10  again, jumbo, no real use as of yet

Total cost so far is about $85.

To give an idea of the savings I'll have, I spend roughly $20 a week on mice feeding 4 adult snakes, and another $5 feeding to juvenile snakes.  I've already begun feeding my younger snakes a pinky each week, and i still have enough reaching adulthood ready to breed.

I am still using that same bag of bedding and same bag of feed. The bedding is half used ( i use it for my snake cages as well) and the feed still has about 25%-33% still available. I am now selling mice at .60-.75 a piece and getting roughly $20 every two-3 weeks for selling my mice. I have already surpassed my starting cost and intend to expand.

Do you guys move your snakes to a different "feeding" cage?
I used to have a ball python when I was younger and my dad told me to do that so they don't strike at me when trying to pick them up from their "living" area.
Idk the validity of that statement, that was 10 years ago.
Thanks.

when feeding i separate them and use different enclosures. I must admit I dont handle my snakes as often as i should, but with the exception of my Red Tail Boa, I intend to breed my snakes (Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons). My baby IJ Carpets are the only snakes I've had snap at me though.
Your dad was right, when they get into the habit of eating right when their cage is opened, they can snap, but if you feed them in a separate location, they won't associate feeding with an open cage. I'm actually cleaning/feeding all my mice and snakes now. I'll take a few pictures.

it's come to my attention that i need to expand. demand in my area is quite high for mice and as it isnt a very time consuming process, the stench gets pretty overwhelming and you need the space. my current setup is in my garage. I clean them once, maybe twice weekly, keeping stench to a minimum, and my garage faces the wind, meaning I can open a back door to allow a breeze to carry the stench out.
Similar setups to this: cost upwards of $2000. I believe I can make one, with research I've done, for about $500-600.
I will use a wooden frame, base and wheels, and buy my container from local shops. Buy or build my own drip line system with a 5 gallon bucket up top. Not sure yet as to what quantity I plan on producing, but I've been asked to supply 100 a week to someone locally. Selling them at a steady .50-.75 a piece, I can turn this into quite a strong side business.

ive now got an insider working for a local pet store who is unable to sell mice at their facility for feeding. She is instead receiving their numbers for me to call. With savings of $3-4, these people are more than happy to buy mice from me at $1 a piece.
