Ive only had 2 pets I had to put down in my life. One was my rat that I had when I was like 5-6 years old. She only lived for like 1 year for some reason and died due to pneumonia. I was obviously too young to go with my grandma to the vet to put it down. I didn't even know they put pets down, or what 'down' really was.

The next was when I was about 15 years old. I had a beautiful golden chicken that I raised since she was 2 days old. She got a horrible disease that ate her muscles and we caught on too late. I was too much of a bitch to be in the same room as the vet putting my baby to sleep. Idk... it would have been so traumatic to see her die..... :(

Those were the only 2 animals I've ever really had that much of a bond to.

Ugh, yes.

When I was about 11, my sister had this really cute dog that we kept in our apartment due to a busy highway being right next to us.
One morning when I was heading to school (I had to walk down the highway, mad dangerous lul), I saw him on the side of the road after getting hit by what I assumed was a car (instead of a truck, 'cause it was still alive and it only seemed like it had major damage done to its legs).
I freaked out and sat by it trying to see if it could maybe get up or move. I was petting its head the whole time and I wondered why it had been left there alone. The person who hit it obviously had to move him to the side of the road, but I guess I can understand (sort of) that not much could have been done since they didn't know who the dog belonged to.

uhh anyway
it ended up taking its last breath while I was petting it and after that I just know I cried and never went to school that day lol :<
ran back home and told my sister, she went back to get it and she buried it idk where.

It was a husky + maltese mix.

have you ever been next to a pet for the last moments of its life?
my friend had a cat for 16 years, she figured out it was dying of old age and she was there during the final moments.

it was lying there holding on to her finger with one of its paws when it died.

:( wierd.... i probably wont look at my pets the same now that i have witnessed this.
i fear i may no longer possess the conviction to put down an animal with such haste.

 maybe i am just having a moment... but its cool how an single animal can be so bonded to one person..

I was there for both of my dogs. Just recently we lost the second, her kidneys gave out and she was suffering so we let her go. Honestly standing there in that room is one of the hardest things i've done. But i could see that she hurting. When I layed her down on the table she just curled up with her head on my arm and relaxed, I could tell that me being there helped to calm her and I think she knew what was coming, but was in so much pain that she just accepted it. I couldnt imagine ever not being there after that. I wouldnt want my pets last feeling to be fear, or for them to feel like I had abandoned them. They are a part of my family, I wouldnt leave my wife or my parents to die alone because theyre my family and I love them. Same theory applies to my pets

i feel like you owe it to be there when an animal gets put to sleep. being there for comfort might be hard, but i think avoiding it would only cause guilt.

The answer is obvious if you've ever really had a companion animal, you fucking owe it to them to be there.

Seriously one of the worst experiences ever, but you have to do it.

You don't owe them shit. Animals are nothing and deserve to die alone like the little animal they are.
