the decision to get a dog is planned. i have to make sure i'm available all day for the first few months while it's a puppy. so i have to do it at the beginning of a school semester when i know my schedule fits, and multiple school semesters. dont wanna get a dog if i'm getting a 9-5 job 2 months later. or if i have a roomate and we both work, gotta make sure our schedules are different so the puppy won't always be alone. eg if i work 7-4, then hopefully roomie works 10-7. and one of us comes home for lunch.

but once i'm ready for a dog, then look around at the breeds i like. if i see a puppy with the personality i like, i'll totally take her

Rescue dogs or friends/family that can't take care of the dog. I prefer to take a dog that really needs a home over buying a dog from a breeder.

First dog was from two houses down, they were camping when a grey wolf got a hold of their shepard/retriever mix. Didn't know that part but didn't really mind once we found out, parents wanted a dog and he was just so beautiful, so we took him. Didn't care about the lineage because my father had a hybrid before when he was a kid. Lost him to a soccer mom in a mini van doing 70 in a 25. Maryland made hybrids illegal in 2006, so at the time, he was still legal. Had no issues with that dog whatsoever except he was so friggin' big and thought he was a lap dog and that even his blunted claws could rip your clothes/skin.
The Rottweiler mix I had named Comet was from the vet, someone abandoned him and the rest of the pups. He was the runt of the litter and the last one left. Saw the ad in the penny saver and went to see, by the time we got there only the runt was left. Fell in love with the little guy immediately. He lived to 15 before old age had to have him put to sleep.
The dog after him I got from my father's uncle. Their female staffordshire shepard mix had puppies and I got one of them. He ended up looking like the mother but with his father's piercing blue eyes. Still have him, lovable pain in my ass.
The next dog I got is a rat terrier black lab mix named Lola, one of my mother's bosses couldn't keep her, was their son's dog and he was going away to college and I was looking for another dog to keep Bandit company since Comet was put to sleep and we took her. They get along even though she thinks she's the queen.

Nothing above fits. I like almost solely the following breeds/types:

Rhodesian Ridgeback
German Shephard
Siberian Husky

my dogs were rescues, kinda.. and all are and were more loyal and listened better than my friends dogs from kennels and shit
my first one i was at a friends cousins house and their kids were little assholes always fuckin with the dog throwing stuff at it and shit, they'd leave it outside on the porch 24/7 in the rain and shit, and this was just some little lap dog terrier so i just took it, dude didn't care or even want the dog and idgaf what his kids thought
and my current dog some drunk dude was giving away lab/german shepard puppies so me and my boy stevie took the last two. and im glad too, my dog is fucking amazing ... has that hybrid vigor
the cats i've had were strays that just wandered to my house and I fed em so yea
