If my apartment allowed bigger dogs, my mom would've let me take her. But they didn't, so I left her at mom's.
must have been hard
hope she didn't suffer but had an easy death, ~12 years is a good age for a golden retriever so she had a full life
it will take a long time to get over the pain but try to remember the good times
we lost our 'friend' (thankfully he died of old age in my arms) mid last year, and even though we have a lovely new puppy it still hurts at times
(but it gives me smiles as well remembering him)
if you can, get a new dog soon - years ago we lost another dog and waited some time, it hurt even more
