Ranked Teams

What is the purpose of a ranked team and how do I create one?

The purpose of ranked teams is to give players a better means of organizing set groups for ranked play and to provide a more accurate read on their skill level as a whole. As a ranked team, players are seen as a single entity in the Ranked Team ladders under one name and Elo rating.

How will ranked teams affect the Season 2 Circuit?

Ranked teams is a training ground for improving your team's skills and preparing to compete in Prized Events. Therefore, the ladder will not be counted directly towards the Season Two Circuit; however, the Ranked Teams ladder can be used by tournament organizers to create seeding for their tournaments (especially for teams that have not earned Circuit Points).

How is team Elo calculated and what does that mean for matchmaking?

In ranked team competition your team’s Elo rating will reflect the performance of your team regardless of your individual performance. At its most basic level the Elo system is a method used for calculating the skill level of players in a head to head game. League of Legends uses a proprietary version of this system in order to place you against challenging opponents in a match.

There are many other factors at play when a match in League of Legends is being formed, but these are the basics of how the Elo system operates.

At its core, comparing the Elo rating of two teams will give you a rough idea of who is more likely to win a match. In the Ranked Team Queue, your rating will reflect your team’s performance as a single entity, and will not reflect your personal rating.

Once the match is complete, the winning players earn a number of points based on the expected result of the match, and the losing team loses that many points. The number of points exchanged is based on how heavily favored one team was over the other. A team that was heavily favored to win earns fewer points for a victory than an underdog team.

Does it cost RP/IP to create a ranked team?

No. There is no cost for creating a ranked team.

What are the responsibilities of a captain?

A captain is responsible for the maintenance of the team roster. Only the captain is allowed to invite players onto a team and, when necessary, remove them. In the event that a captain wants to leave the team or no longer wishes to be captain, they are able to pass the office along to another member of the team.

Can a captain pass on ownership?

Yes, a captain can pass along ownership of a team in the event that they wish to leave the team or no longer want to hold the office of captain.

Will the captain need to be online for us to join the Ranked Team queue?

No. The captain is not required to participate in all Ranked Team matches, and the rest of the team is free to enter the queue without them.

How many ranked teams can I be a member of at one time?

You are able to maintain membership in as many as five ranked teams at any one point in time.

How many members can be in a ranked team?

Each ranked team can have a maximum roster size of eight summoners.

Why limit how many members can be members of the same ranked team?

We would like your ranked team to reflect a concerted effort to practice with a consistent group and advance up the ladder, but we believe that it is also important to allow players to maintain alternates for ease of scheduling.

How many members of my team need to be online in order for me to join the Ranked Team queue?

At least five team members need to be available for your team to be able to queue for Summoner’s Rift, while at least three members of your team need to be online to queue for Twisted Treeline. The captain does not need to be online in order for the remainder of the team to play.

If I am a member of multiple teams, how do I choose which team I queue with?

After you have chosen your game type, you will be given the option to select which of your current teams you would like to enter the matchmaking queue. For more information on competing with your ranked team, visit our guide to Getting Started with Ranked Teams.

What do the “provisional” and “seeded” statuses mean?

When a team is first created, they are considered provisional. Provisional teams are not listed on the Ranked Team ladders, but are able to arrange and rearrange their team roster as frequently as they would like.

Only once a team has completed five games in any one ladder will a team be listed on the ladder. At this point the team is considered seeded and will only be able to add a single new member to the team lineup each week. The maximum number of players allowed on the team roster at any point in time is still eight.

I am a professional League of Legends player in an established team. How can I secure our team’s name and tag?

We are cognizant of the fact that many established teams will want to form a ranked team under their official banner. For this reason we have reserved the names of many of the more prominent eSports organizations in preparation for this event.
