they held a 10$ sale for a bit, it ended, and the game became free.

Yes, but their patcher is shit, takes fucking forever to patch the game. I would guess they changed the game to free because of the quality of their server stability + Patcher.

I downloaded 2 patches today

A SC2 patch
and
A HoN patch.

The hon patch was roughly the same size as the SC2 patch, and took about 80x longer.
